Princess Anne compared her start in royal life to 'pressure' now faced by Princess Kate

Princess Anne has opened how the start of her own royal life compares to the one faced by the younger, modern-day royals.

During an appearance in the documentary, “Anne: The Princess Royal at 70,” in August 2020, Anne offered a view into how life has changed for the newer generation of royals – for example, the Princess of Wales.

Princess Anne, who is celebrating her 73rd birthday today, said: “The pressure that is applied to the younger members of the family, it’s always worse.”

Born in 1950, Anne was the second child, and only daughter, of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

Speaking of the extra pressures they face in the modern age, Anne placed the blame on one thing in particular – social media.

Anne said: “That’s what the media is interested in. That’s hard sometimes to deal with.

“But there was no social media in my day, and it’s probably made it more difficult.”

The royal added: “With online technology… being in touch is one thing but it’s not quite the same.

“The ability to meet people, that’s what makes the difference. I know what Twitter is, but I wouldn’t go anywhere near it if you paid me frankly. But that’s a slightly different issue.”

Unlike Anne, Kate married into the Royal Family.

Although she met Prince William in 2003, their relationship grew at a steady rate and the couple tied the knot in 2011.

The 41-year-old is known to have struggled to adjust at the very start, but has blossomed into one of the most popular members of the Royal Family.

Although the royals never reveal how they plan to spend their birthdays, it is likely that Anne will be spending her special day with her family – in particular her children and grandchildren.
