The Duchess of Sussex’s former friend said that Meghan “wasn’t up for the job” of being a royal.
Meghan officially joined the Royal Family in May 2018, less than two years after meeting Prince Harry.
Lizzie Cundy said she didn’t believe the former Suits actress was ever able to step up and do what was needed to fully commit to being a working member of the Royal Family.
She said: “We could all see the writing was on the wall, it’s very different when you’re a celebrity princess then being a royal princess and frankly, Meghan wasn’t up for the job.”
Ms Cundy’s friendship with Meghan began in 2013, having first met at a charity event held by her friend, John Caudwell.
Speaking of Meghan, Ms Cundy told the Mirror: “She didn’t want to put the hard work in, opening hospitals and doing all the roles that royals do. It’s not easy [and] it’s not glamorous.”
Ms Cundy added: “I think Meghan thought she was going to be the top dog star of the show and Princess Kate was always going to have that role.”
Speaking on the rumours that the couple are headed for a divorce, Ms Cundy added: “I don’t want to see any couple split up when any marriage falls apart, it’s sad, especially when you have children.”
Despite this, she did add that she believes Harry would benefit from a separation, making no comment on how Meghan would take it.
In her book ‘The Palace Papers’, which was released last year, author Tina Brown said that Prince William reportedly thought Meghan “should have more time in [order] to build up her life in the UK”, prior to marrying his younger brother.
Brown wrote: “It was hard enough for Kate, but Meghan was a glamorous actress who would be the first woman of colour to join the Royal Family, factors that would add enormously to the pressure.”
Meghan and Harry decided to step down as senior royals in early 2020, moving to the US just a few weeks after the announcement.
The couple are now based in California with their two children, Archie, four and two-year-old Lilibet.
Meghan and Harry made their announcement that they were quitting via their official Instagram profile, noting their desire to “work to become financially independent”.
