Met Office issues new 'danger to life' warning for parts of England in matter of hours

The Met Office has issued fresh weather warnings covering large swathes of the UK, warning of “danger to life” rain and wind as Storm Babet batters the nation.

A new yellow rain warning is in place across Northern England starting from 6pm tonight until 6am Saturday morning.

Around 20-40 mm of rainfall is expected to fall quite widely, though some parts of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales could pick up 50-70 mm.

The Met Office wrote: “In the north of the warning area, especially the higher parts of the North Pennines and Cheviots may locally see in excess of 100 mm of rain through the period. Strong easterly winds may exacerbate the impacts brought about by the heavy rain.”

Areas affected include the East Midlands, North East England, North West England and Yorkshire & Humber.
