Leclerc set to leave Ferrari as Prancing Horse announce reshuffle of academy


Charles Leclerc’s brother Arthur has left the Ferrari Drivers Academy as part of a structural reshuffle ahead of the 2024 season. A statement from the Academy affirms that Leclerc is no longer a member of the developmental programme, but “remains part of the Ferrari family”.

“We would like to thank Arthur Leclerc as he moves on from @InsideFDA,” read a statement on X. “Arthur will remain part of the Ferrari family and we’re excited to see his next journey.”

Leclerc became a Ferrari junior in 2020 and has since gone on to place second in the 2020 Formula Regional European Championship and first in the 2022 Formula Regional Asian Championship.

He is also a three-time Formula 3 race winner and most recently became a Formula 2 podium finisher at the Albert Park Circuit, Melbourne in April. 

James Wharton, who won the F4 UAE title and came fourth in the Italian Formula 4, is set to depart as well while Aurelia Nobels and Maya Weug remain on board and will race in the F1 Academy series next year.

“After three years with @InsideFDA. James Wharton will be departing the academy,” An FDA statement began. “We would like to thank James for his amazing contribution to #FDA and wish him the best of luck in his next adventure.”

 

Ferrari also announced that Jock Clear will replace Marco Matassa as head of the Academy. The Englishman joined the Prancing Horse as an engineer in 2015 and has been working in F1 since 1989. 

Clear previously held engineering positions with Benetton, Lotus, Williams and Mercedes and has a wealth of experience to pass on to the young drivers.
