Wimbledon champion aged 30 refusing to return to tennis after becoming Zumba instructor

Garbine Muguruza revealed that she has no plans to return to tennis after taking a break from the sport, with her last match coming in January. The former Wimbledon champion later revealed that she had become a Zumba instructor and now says tennis has no place in her daily routine.

Muguruza announced her hiatus from tennis earlier this year after crashing out in the first round of the Lyon Open. The 30-year-old had been struggling for form, with her last match win coming in September 2022. She originally pulled out of Indian Wells and Miami, later announcing that she would extend her break and miss the French Open and Wimbledon despite being a former champion at both events.

The former world No 1 did not return for the US Open, hinting that her break would continue indefinitely. And Muguruza has now admitted that she has no intentions of returning to the sport despite being only 30 years old.

“I am living this break in a very happy way since it was something that my body and my mind needed so I am really enjoying these moments,” the Spaniard told Women’s Health. “As of today I have no intention.

“My plan right now is to sleep, rest, be with my loved ones, make up for lost time… I don’t see beyond what I’m doing today, tomorrow and this week.” While Muguruza claimed that “tennis has no place in my daily routine” she has still been keeping updated with some of her rivals’ results.

She added: “I still pay attention to my teammates, from time to time I can play, but not intensely but more for fun. It doesn’t occupy my mind, my day or my routines, I’m really taking a real break and I try to stay away from the clues.”

For now, Muguruza is enjoying a different career path. The two-time Grand Slam champion has turned to Zumba and recently took part in a cardio event held in Malaga with over 500 instructions in attendance.
