William and Kate's new strategy to win over fans receives lukewarm response from royals

Prince William and Kate have promoted a new “slick” social media strategy over the past month in an attempt to win over younger generations. The Prince and Princess of Wales have released a series of well-produced videos on Instagram showing off a behind-the-scenes round-up of the King’s Coronation. However, Rebecca English, royal editor at the Daily Mail, revealed that the strategy has received a lukewarm response from other royals.

She told Palace Confidential that the “jury is still out among the wider royal household” as to whether the Waleses are going about this in the right way.

The Daily Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden explained the strategy: “They have been releasing a few over the course of the Coronation and since. They are trying to show a behind-the-scenes look at what they do. They have raised eyebrows because they are different from want they expect.”

He adde that the couple are trying to “reach people who are less supportive of the royal family generally.”

Ms English added that opinion polls show a “generational” divide when it comes to support for the monarchy.

She said: “Support is really rock solid amongst the older generation, but not so much amongst the younger generation.”

Ms English added that the videos also gave the Waleses a chance to share the work they are carrying out on issues such as homelessness.

The royal editor noted that a source in the royal household had told her the Waleses had got the “right idea” but that there was still some discussion about the slick production of the videos.

The videos, produced by filmmaker Will Warr, show Kate at home with her children Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte before leaving for the Coronation ceremony.

It also offers a glimpse of Louis, five, looking quite serious, while his eight-year-old sister Charlotte is beaming and playful.

The family is also seen taking part in the Big Help Out.

Mr Eden noted that the King and Queen are now advertising for their own videographer, presumably to produce similar content to the Wales’s.
