'We deserve more' – Sergio Garcia shoots down Rory McIlroy LIV Golf claims

Sergio Garcia has responded to Rory McIlroy’s latest LIV Golf comments, after the Northern Irishman called for the breakaway league to have a two-month stint on the pro golf schedule. McIlroy has emerged as one of LIV’s biggest critics since its formation in June 2022.

Heading into the New Year though the Northern Irishman appeared to soften his stance towards the rival tour, suggesting the Saudi-backed league could well have a place in the sport alongside the PGA Tour. His suggestion was to offer LIV an eight-week slot within the season, similar to cricket’s Indian Premier League.

He told the Stick to Football podcast: “What I would love LIV to turn into is almost like the Indian Premier League of golf. The IPL in cricket, they take two months during the calendar.

“You have four weeks in May and four weeks in November, and you go and do this team stuff – it’s a bit different, and it’s a different format. If they were to do something like that, I think that sounds like fun – you’re at least working within the ecosystem.”

While McIlroy’s softening stance will no be more than welcomed by the LIV setup, one of the circuit’s 12 captains, Garcia, is far from convinced. He believes the breakaway league deserves its year-long schedule to be an ever-present in the world of golf moving forward.

He told The Standard: “I don’t think we want to be important for one month. We all deserve more than that.” As a result, the Spaniard believes the latest statement signing of fellow countryman Jon Rahm shows LIV is here to stay.
