A woman has been charged for allegedly stealing a white delivery van loaded with a calorific cargo – 10,000 Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
The vehicle disappeared from a 7/11 petrol station in Carlingford, a suburb in northwest Sydney, Australia, in the early hours of November 29.
At around 3.30am local time, police received reports of a van allegedly stolen by an unknown woman.
More than a week later, on December 8, police found the van abandoned in a parking lot in Parramatta, another suburb only a handful of kilometres away from the petrol station.
Along with the vehicle were also thousands of doughnuts, described by a NSW police spokesman as “destroyed”.
The woman, aged 28, was arrested on Thursday at 11am local time and taken to Penrith Police Station, where she was charged with taking and driving conveyance without the consent of the owner, driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period and travelling or attempting to travel without a valid ticket, News.com.au reported.
The woman was refused bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on December 14.
CCTV footage of the incident allegedly shows a woman walking around the service station. The clip also shows the vehicle being driven away.
It isn’t clear whether the person who drove away with the stolen van was aware of its sweet cargo.
After the disappearance of the van, Krispy Kreme reported the incident and reassured its customers it was “working to replace the 10,000 stolen doughnuts”.
The company’s statement also added in November: “Police are currently searching for the van and the sweet-toothed thief.”
Police also issued a statement after the van went missing – and included a few puns.
The vehicle, the statement read, was “regrettably not sprinkled with tracking devices”.
Urging people with information to contact Crime Stoppers, the message added: “If you’ve got any sweet leads or krispy CCTV footage, donut keep it to yourself!”
