US needs 'extremely powerful' weapon to stay 'superior' global power as threats multiply

The United States Army will need to turn to an “extremely powerful” weapon to maintain “superiority” over its foes as global threats increase.

Retired Army Gen. Mark Milley argued Artificial Intelligence will play a pivotal role in guaranteeing the US a leading spot over all other militaries.

Milley insisted the rapid development of AI technology will bring about drastic changes to weaponry, a change the US will need to embrace to ensure its military is prepared to fight and win future wars.

Speaking to 60 Minutes, the former Joint Chiefs Chair said: “Artificial Intelligence is extremely powerful.

“It’s coming at us. I suspect it will be probably optimized for command and control of military operations within maybe 10 to 15 years, max.”

The retired general argued the area AI will likely prove to be most useful to the military is in planning, or the so-called OODA loop – observe, orient, decide, act.

He estimates Artificial Intelligence will someday be used to review large chunks of information to then advise when and where to move US forces.

Milley also warned other countries are on track to turn more and more to AI, reiterating the importance for the US to stay on top of the field.

And asked whether these advanced technologies could make wars more likely, he conceded that “it could, it actually could.”

He added: “Artificial Intelligence has a huge amount of legal, ethical and moral implications that we’re just beginning to start to come to grips with.”

Milley’s forecast was echoed by the founder of the Center for Advanced Preparedness and Threat Response Simulation, who also argued AI technology could be implemented in war gaming exercises to assess the feasibility of manoeuvres.

Speaking to Fox News, Phil Siegel said: “This is a perfect example of where AI and war gaming can intersect to set strategy and tactics.

“There are so many options for using AI, from autonomous vehicles to troop and equipment placement, to consumables usage and replenishment, to simply providing input on battle strategy and tactics.

“Gaming which uses will be most advantageous and have the best payoff will allow the military to invest wisely in the technology.”

The expert joined Milley in warning the US will also need to hire “solid AI experts” and then work closely with the private sector “to accelerate its capabilities.”

He added: “Everyone is already using AI technologies and will be accelerating their use. Our military needs to invest heavily to stay out front.”
