Ukraine LIVE: Putin plots major military recruitment drive to sign up 400k more troops

Vladimir Putin is planning a “significant military recruitment campaign” with the goal of enlisting an additional 400,000 soldiers to fight in Ukraine, according to the latest UK Ministry of Defence intelligence update. The MoD believe that while the campaign is being marketed as a call for voluntary, professional recruits rather than obligatory mobilization, this difference may be blurred in practice.

The Ministry of Defence also stated that to achieve their recruitment goals, regional authorities in Russia may turn to coercive methods.

The Russian government is thought to have selected the “volunteer model” to handle a military manpower shortfall while also minimising civilian resistance, the latest update suggests, before adding that “rebuilding Russia’s combat power in Ukraine will require more than just personnel; Russia needs more munitions and military equipment supplies than it currently has available”.
