Tottenham told they'll 'have to pay record fee' for Harry Kane replacement

Tottenham have been told they will have to pay Feyenoord a record fee to sign striker Santiago Gimenez. Spurs are exploring their options in the market to replace the departed Harry Kane.

Kane finally left Tottenham for Bayern Munich just before the start of the Premier League season. Ange Postecoglou did not bring in a like-for-like player before the end of the summer transfer window.

He did splash out £47.5million on Brennan Johnson, who has played most of his career out wide. Son Heung-min has been handed the responsibility up top of late, with Richarlison having to settle for a role off the bench.

But Tottenham know they need to strengthen further in attack following Kane’s exit. Gimenez was linked with a move late in the window but it didn’t materialise.

Interest is still there but he won’t come cheap. According to Dutch outlet Voetbal4U, Feyenoord want to receive a club-record fee for Gimenez.

According to Transfermarkt, the highest fee Feyenoord have ever received for a player is £21.6m (€25m), which they got for both Luis Sinisterra in 2022 and Orkun Kokcu in June this year. However, Voetbal4U claims Feyenoord are set to ask for substantially more than that.

The Eredivisie club will want between £34.7m (€40m) and £43.3m (€50m) for the 22-year-old. Spurs’ interest in Gimenez became known in August.

Agent Morris Pagniello, who is close to the family of the Mexico star, revealed that Tottenham were one of a host of clubs keeping an eye on him. He told Mediotempo: “Santi is one of the top 10 players in Europe, of the strikers there are, because there are few and now with the departure of many strikers to Saudi Arabia, there are few on the market.

“Then even Tottenham (became interested), many clubs. I have a friend who trains there and there are many clubs that would like to have Santi this season.”

Gimenez stayed put and has continued to impress in a Feyenoord shirt. He has scored nine goals in just six Eredivisie matches so far this season.

He scored a hat-trick in his last outing against Ajax, the game that was interrupted last Sunday due to crowd trouble and concluded on Wednesday. Gimenez has scored in each of his last five matches, with his only blank coming on the opening day against Fortuna Sittard.

Gimenez joined Feyenoord from Mexican side Cruz Azul in July 2022. He has 32 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions.
