The name that confused listeners to Meghan Markle's axed podcast

Fans have explained how Meghan Markle made a big “mistake” with the name of her Archetypes podcast after it was announced Spotify will not be running it for a second season. The popular 12-episode series is not being renewed by mutual agreement, it has emerged.

The Duchess of Sussex released her Archetypes podcast in August 2022.

While the show was hugely popular after it was first released, some listeners reportedly confused the name chosen by Meghan Markle.

The Cambridge dictionary defines an Archetype is as a typical example of something, or the original model of something from which others are copied.

It can often refer to a classic character from old stories and myths that have been passed down over the years – such as a hero or villain.

But some fans became confused with another word – stereotype – and mistook Archetype for this word.

Several listeners believe in her first 12 episodes, Meghan was discussing stereotypes rather than archetypes.

One person said on Twitter: “Meghan talking about outdated stereotypes and calling it Archetypes? Not interesting.”

Another said: “I’d let Meghan be the person who doesn’t know the difference between stereotypes and archetypes.”

A third added: “She’s talking about stereotypes not archetypes . She’s yet to give an example of an archetype.”

When announcing the name of the series, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex explained the decision behind their use of “arche” was inspired by the Greek word meaning “source of action”.

The cancellation of the show was confirmed in a joint statement from Archewell Audio, the couple’s content creation label, and the streaming giant.

It read: “Spotify and Archewell Audio have mutually agreed to part ways and are proud of the series we made together.”

It means there will be no second series of Archetypes.

In the show, the Duchess hosted guests like tennis ace Serena Williams and singer Mariah Carey.

Meghan’s talent agency WME – who signed her on in April – said the team behind Archetypes “remain proud” of the podcast they created at Spotify.

But they added: “Meghan is continuing to develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform.”
