Stonehenge tunnel: Major update as new £1.7bn UK dual carriageway takes huge step closer

Campaigners have sensationally lost their battle to stop a two-mile tunnel being built, running past the famous world heritage site Stonehenge. Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site (SSWHS) lost a High Court challenge against the plans to build the tunnel from Amesbury to Berwick Down.

The High Court quashed it in 2021 amid environmental concerns, but the Department for Transport (DfT) approved it again on July 14 last year. Campaigners insisted the development would destroy around seven hectares of the site.
