SNP conference LIVE: Humza Yousaf wrecks Nicola Sturgeon's legacy with independence U-turn

Humza Yousaf has taken a sledgehammer to Nicola Sturgeon’s legacy by rejecting her master plan to use the next general election as a de facto referendum on Scottish independence.

The SNP has backed plans to move away from the approach employed by its former leader and has instead stated should it win a majority of seats in the next general election, it will begin negotiations with Westminster on the way to secure independence.

Mr Yousaf, who supported the switch away from his predecessor, said Ms Sturgeon’s blueprint was the “wrong approach” to take.

But one SNP MP described the move as seeking a mandate to secure independence rather than achieving a vote itself, risking a full-blown row in the party.
