Small town raises £41,000 to buy seizure dog for police chief's daughter

Kind-hearted residents of a small town in Texas, US are raising £41,000 ($50,000) to buy a seizure dog for the local police chief’s daughter.

Kynadee Campbell, nine, weighed just 1.4 pounds when she was born at 28 weeks – and has suffered a series of medical issues in the years since.

She has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and respiratory problems – and experiences regular seizures.

Little Kynadee is the daughter of Delvon Campbell, the police chief in Decatur – a town with a population of around 6,000.

A GoFundMe was made by members of the Decatur community on Kynadee’s behalf, with the goal of raising £41,000 ($50,000) to pay for a seizure dog and her treatment. It has so far raised around £35,000 ($43,000).

The dogs can cost up to £49,000 ($60,000).

Explaining her condition to the Wise County Messenger, police chief Campbell said: “The seizures started happening more frequently and they changed from the normal seizures she’d been having previously.

“She’d been having multiple seizures pretty much back to back, and none of the medicines were working.”

On Labor Day weekend, she suffered 25 seizures and was admitted to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.

There, she was placed on ventilator for 15 days. She spent a total of 30 days in hospital.

Her family fears the seizures may occur in the middle of the night. They are in “shock and awe” at the response from their town.

Seizure dogs are trained to bark to alert family when someone is having a seizure or activating a call system. They may also lie next to the sufferer to protect them.
