Small dogs live longer than bigger ones – here’s why

Small dogs live longer than bigger breeds because they are prone to less severe ailments, according to research.

The larger pets face cancer, bone-related diseases, gastrointestinal problems, neurological and endocrine issues.

But scientists from the Washington University in Missouri – analysing 25,000 canines from 238 breeds – found smaller dogs more likely to have ocular, cardiac and respiratory problems.

Lead author Yunbi Nam explained: “The findings could lead to an understanding of conditions that may underlie lower lifespans.”
