Rugby World Cup plunged into controversy as video evidence of 'illegal charge' emerges

Kolbe appeared to begin his charge down after Ramos moved his upper body, but before making a run towards the ball as the official appeared to be content with the legitimacy of the block – though Kolbe admitted that he was hoping the referee would not look at the replay.

“I think I was OK behind the line. I ran as quickly as possible to try to block and put a little pressure on him,” Kolbe said. “I was hoping the referee wouldn’t ask for the video. But if he had done it, I’m sure I was in the game.

“I have never charged down a kick before, it was my first one. I played with Thomas for six years and you have an idea of what his process is when it comes to goal-kicking and you analyse players throughout the week.”
