Rugby World Cup fans hospitalised after 'brutal attack from England supporters' in France

An alleged attack from English supporters at the Rugby World Cup over the weekend has left two Welsh fans in hospital. Marseille hosted both Wales and England’s respective quarter-finals over the past weekend.

And it appears as though tempers flared with police called to the scene late on Sunday night. French media reported that a Welsh man was lying down on the ground with a head injury along with his son, who was aged in his 20s.

The two Welshmen claimed they were attacked by England supporters and were soon taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A British man, who was found to be in possession of five grams of cocaine, was later arrested by local police.

But French police downplayed the situation as an “isolated incident” with the rest of the weekend’s matches going largely untroubled. A French police source said: “It’s true that there was a fight but it should not be blown out of proportion.

“It involved four British people — two on each side — but it was an isolated incident and we should not lose sight of the fact that globally the weekend went well in Marseille.”

The incident came after all quarter-final matches had been played with England scraping through past Fiji on Sunday. They’re now the only home nation left in the World Cup after Wales were knocked out on Saturday by Argentina.
