Rasmus Hojlund costs Jonny Evans a first Man Utd goal in nine years as VAR intervenes

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund cost Jonny Evans a first Red Devils goal for nine years on Saturday night after the Northern Ireland international had a header ruled out against Burnley following a VAR check. United signed Evans for a second time in the summer after the ace left Leicester.

United returned to domestic action at Turf Moor following their 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek as boss Erik ten Hag tasked his side with turning their early season poor form around. The 13-time Premier League champions underwhelmed during August, despite winning two of their three matches, and then suffered back-to-back losses to Arsenal and Brighton earlier in September.

United attempted to make an early breakthrough at Burnley as they looked to close the gap on the teams in the top four. And they thought they had their breakthrough midway through the opening period as Evans rose highest to head home Sergio Reguilon’s corner.

But Hojlund was standing directly in front of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as the ball sailed into the goal, and referee Tony Harrington was asked to go over to the VAR monitor for a check.
