Putin sabotage group unmasked by Ukraine in bloody border battle as Russians sent packing

Ukrainian soldiers in Sumy Oblast successfully fought off a Russian sabotage group attempting to cross the border into Ukraine, according to a military report.

Lieutenant General Serhii Naiev, who is responsible for the defense of Ukraine’s northern border, said on Sunday that Territorial Defense Forces in the oblast defeated a Russian subversive and reconnaissance group at the border.

At 6.20pm local time on Saturday, Ukrainian soldiers opened fire on an armed Russian group of 10 people near the town Hlukhiv, along the border with Russia.

The Russian group then split in two and attempted to bypass the Ukrainians, Naiev said.

Ukraine’s counter-sabotage team then fired at the enemy and pushed them back from the border after an hour-and-a-half battle.

Just last month, a Russian sabotage group staged an attack and killed two civilians in the region.

With Ukraine’s soldiers concentrated in the eastern regions of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv, the attempted sabotage on Saturday suggests that Moscow could be probing vulnerability on a new front to further stretch Ukrainian resources.

Fighting has also been particularly fierce in the eastern city of Avdiivka, where Moscow is attempting to encircle more of Kyiv’s troops.
