Princess Kate’s nine secret talents, from scuba diving to home-made sausages

Sign Language

While on a visit to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall earlier this year Kate demonstrated her skills communicating in sign language as she greeted children from the King Charles C of E Primary School.

Before watching a mode boat race Kate used sign language to speak with a child who was hard of hearing, however, this was not the first time she has communicated in such a way.

In 2014 the Princess used sign language during a visit to a local scout club in east London, using it to say the Scout promise: “I promise to do my best, to be kind and helpful and to love my world.”

Pianist

Eurovision was not the first time Kate has shown off her musical skills as she accompanied singer Tom Walker during the annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey in 2021.

Speaking a year later about the performance, Tom told Good Morning Britain: “She is fantastic, she is a really talented musician.”

Artistic talents

Kate also boasts a number of artistic skills, including her photography, but she also has a love of drawing and painting, having achieved a 2:1 degree in History of Art from St Andrew’s University.

Scuba-diving

Some of Kate’s interests are easier to indulge while travelling abroad, as she and William enjoyed a spot of scuba diving while in Belize as part of their Caribbean tour.

Kate gained her Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) open water diving qualification in 2015, with a spokesperson from Kensington Palace confirming: “Diving is something the Duchess very much enjoys, and the Duke of Cambridge, who is of course President of the BSAC, has said in the past that he is hopeful his children will become interested in the sport.”

Cooking

Closer to home William has also praised his wife’s cooking, even having cooked the late Queen Elizabeth some homemade chutney from her grandmother’s own recipe as a Christmas present.

She also has her own sausage maker to help her make tasty meals for her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Gardening

Another of Kate’s hobbies is gardening, as back in 2019 she created an innovative design for that year’s Chelsea Flower Show with the aim of encouraging families to “get outside” and “enjoy nature”.

The garden featured a tree house, waterfall, rustic den and a campfire as well as tree stumps, steppingstones and a hollow log for children to play on.

Rowing

Staying outside Kate is known for her love of getting stuck into competitive sport, but one hobby that people may not know about is that the Princess is an experienced rower.

In 2007 she was set to take part in a dragon boat race across the English Channel, but was ultimately advised not to by Buckingham Palace.

Knitting

However, one thing that Kate has admitted she can’t get her head around is knitting.

In 2020 she told a group of women in Glasgow she had been trying to knit a jumper for her son George but that it “splattered” when she got halfway down.
