Princess Kate and Prince William's affectionate habits laid bare as they 'broke the mould'

Kate, Princess of Wales, and Prince William have “broken the mould” when it comes to how they behave in public and show their affection for one another, according to a commentator.

With the way they behave with each other in public, the Prince and Princess of Wales have shown how “in tune” they are and what their relationship looks like behind closed doors, a body language expert believes.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Bingo, body language expert Darren Stanton said: “William and Kate are a very strong couple, and their relationship has continued to evolve and grow even stronger over the years.”

The couple met in 2001, when they were both students at St Andrews University in Scotland. During the first months of studies, they grew from coursemates to friends and eventually fell in love.

Mr Stanton believes the origin of their relationship still transpires from their behaviour.

He said: “They started off as independent students who found true love. They were sweethearts, and we still see that side to them now.”

At the beginning of their marriage Princess Kate and Prince William were very sparse when it came to their public display of affection, in line with the behaviour always displayed by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

However, in recent years, as their public confidence grew, the Prince and Princess of Wales have started to provide people with a glimpse of their real selves, Mr Stanton said.

He said: “An important thing I have seen over the years is that both their levels of confidence and independence – in public and private – has really developed. We have never seen senior members of the Royal Family be so affectionate with one another in the public eye.

“If we look back at photographs of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, we would never have seen them holding hands or being tactile with each other.

“This shows how in tune William and Kate are with each other on an emotional level. They’re also not afraid to be open and honest through their body gestures about how they feel.

“They’ve really broken the mould, and there’s a level of humour, playfulness and mischievousness to them when they want to be – which is really refreshing to see.”

Kate and William’s public display of affection rarely is a public kiss or prolonged hand-holding. Rather, it often consists of eye gazes, knowing smiles and brief strokes on their backs.

But they have been caught on camera hugging and kissing each other, either during behind-the-scenes moments or at events where the etiquette allowed for it, such as at charity polo matches.
