Princess Diana's engagement blouse expected to sell for £150,000 at auction

Princess Diana’s famous pink silk chiffon engagement blouse – from her 1981 engagement portrait – will be up for auction in December.

Julien’s Auctions of Beverly Hills will be hosting the auction from December 14 to 17 – and it is expected to fetch up to £150,000.

Diana was photographed wearing the blouse by Lord Snowdon and it appeared in the February 1981 issue of Vogue magazine.

She was seen wearing the blouse more than once during her engagment.

Snowdon’s photograph hung in the National Portrait Gallery from July 2007 to 2008 as part of the ‘Diana, Princess of Wales’ exhibit.

The prestigious museum writes: “The publication of this portrait in Vogue magazine in February 1981 coincided with the official announcement of the engagement of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

“Commissioned by Vogue as part of a ‘Portrait Portfolio’ of young aristocratic women by the photographer Lord Snowdon, it was used by several magazines and newspapers when the engagement was announced.”

The blouse is by Emanuel, who also designed her wedding dress.

Prince Charles, 32, proposed to Diana Spencer, 19, in 1981. They had only gone on 10 or so dates before the engagement, reports Vogue.

She said “yes” and the two were married on July 29, 1981. They divorced in 1996.

Juien’s Auctions released a statement about the upcoming event: “Princess Diana’s engagement blouse transcends fashion; it’s a poignant symbol of love, grace, and a timeless moment in history. The ‘cherished’ blouse captures the ‘elegance’ of a woman who forever captivated hearts around the world.”
