Princess Anne's future plans let slip by royal expert as King warned about fresh 'problem'

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk and said: “Princess Anne works hard, detests fuss and will, almost certainly, never retire. She is widely respected and admired and has been for decades.”

“The monarchy needs the pull and glamour of the Waleses too, and she dislikes the hype that inevitably goes with their charitable ventures.”

Prince William and Princess Kate carried out a total of 172 and 128 engagements respectively this year, as the majority of duties were taken up by senior royals.

The expert went on to say that the number of royal engagements may have to get cut in the future due to the fact there aren’t that many of them to carry them out until William and Kate’s children come of age.

He explained: “Only four working royals are under 70 and this is likely to present a problem and lead to cuts in the number of royal engagements until George, Charlotte and Louis are able to play their part in royal activities.”

Charles has been keen on a slimmed-down monarchy for decades, a promise he made clear when he became King last year.

However, after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure in 2020, Charles has been warned of a possible “burn-out” following the number of engagements and the average age of the Firm.

Fitzwilliams said: “We have not heard any more about the “slimline monarchy”, with only four working royals under 70, we are not likely to.”
