Prince William and Kate used to sneak off for secret dates to a very ordinary location

The Prince and Princess of Wales may have met over 20 years ago, but scenes from Netflix’s The Crown depict the moments where the couple’s spark first began.

William and Kate met at St Andrews University in Scotland, while undertaking their undergraduate degrees – with both William and Kate studying Art History, though William would later changed his subject to Geography.

‌The couple’s similarities went deeper than just the course they studied though, with both growing up in home counties, attending top boarding schools, and mixing in very high society circles.

It’s no surprise then that the couple would hit it off, and eventually become husband and wife, as well as future King and Queen – but former royal butler revealed that the couple used to have ro sneak out for secret dates to get to know each other.

Speaking fondly of the couple’s secret meetings in their early days of dating, Grant Harold told Slingo.com: “I remember them ordering curries to the house and organising secret cinema trips.

“When they lived in Tetbury, I remember going to the local pub and Kate and William were just sitting in there having a drink. We had a nice chat. They were so normal and like any other couple. And the locals just left them alone.”

Mr Harrold also detailed William’s romantic nature towards Kate: “William is a romantic at heart. I remember him asking me to help with a candlelit dinner for Kate to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was the Valentine’s after they got engaged and shortly before their wedding.‌

“I was so happy to be involved. I can’t remember exactly what was served but I’m sure William chose Kate’s favourite dessert. He’s got a romantic side.”‌

The couple’s impulsive nature has had to subside since marriage, three children and increased responsibilities to The Firm, according to Mr Harrold, though he notes that the couple still sneak in the fun of their early dating days.

“They’re more grown up and have responsibilities as future King and Queen. They take that seriously but it means they have to be more careful with the everyday things, like pub drinks and date nights. But I’ll bet money they still go incognito to the cinema when they can.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s relationship dominates the storylines of the final episodes of The Crown, which were released on Netflix today.
