Prince William and Kate prepare to go head-to-head in special SportsAid challenge today

Prince William and Princess Kate will be showing their competitive side today when they attend a mental fitness workshop in Marlow.

The workshop, run by SportsAid – who Kate is a patron of – and BelievePerform, will take place this morning at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s visit will aim to promote the need for better support of young people in sports and their families and how they can equip themselves with the right skills to navigate through healthy and happy experiences in sports and life as well as boost their mental wellbeing.

And Kate and William are set to go head-to-head today as they will take part in a game of goalball, a visually impaired Paralympic sport.

They will also join young athletes and participate in two practical sessions on building mental resilience, which will see the pair try to score points in a netball hoop under various forms of external pressures such as performing against the clock or with some crowd noise.

Kate and William were in rival sloops, with the Prince of Wales crossing the finish line five minutes earlier than Kate.

In 2011, whilst on a trip to Canada, the newlywed couple got on the boats again as they raced against each other in a Dragon Boat Race across Dalvay Lake. William won again as his team finished seven minutes earlier.

During today’s engagement, the royal couple will also speak to young athletes and their parents about what kind of support SportsAid is offering them to build their mental fitness.

Kate and William will be joined by gold medal-winning Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds and Commonwealth champion netball player Ama Agbeze.

Their visit comes as new research suggests more than two in 10 young athletes said they “occasionally” feel anxious in their day-to-day life with two in 10 saying they “often” or “always” feel anxious.

Another four in 10 athletes have “little”, “none” or are “not sure” of how much access they have to mental health services or support.

Kate and William have been carrying out several royal engagements this week to mark World Mental Health Day which took place on October 10.
