Prince Harry's poppy row showed how deep the 'expendable' Duke's rift with the royals is

Prince Harry’s request to have a wreath laid by the Cenotaph on his behalf in 2020 was rejected by courtiers, it was claimed because the Duke was no longer a working royal at the time.

At the time, Robert Lacey, royal expert and author of Battle of Brothers, claimed Harry – who it’s claimed “doesn’t care” he wasn’t invited to King Charles’s birthday – was seen as “expendable” by William and Charles.

He told Newsweek: “I think this is an indication that things are worse than we thought. If everything was hunkydorey there seems no reason why a wreath should not have been laid in Harry’s name.

“If the royal family or the palace wanted to co-operate then it would seem to be a perfectly reasonable request to make that could have been fulfilled.

“I don’t think it augurs well for the prospects of a reconciliation.”

But he did say the gesture showed Harry’s eagerness to fix the broken relationship with William and the Royal Family.

He added: “On the face of this, it would seem that Harry is keener on reconciliation or maintaining some sort of link than the palace is to granting one.”

Harry and Meghan’s actions around Armistice Day have caused anger multiple times. Meghan Markle wore a poppy brooch on her sweater during an opening of a new Navy fitness centre in San Diego recently.

But this angered some US veterans, who took issue with the Duchess of Sussex wearing a “British poppy”.

“Meghan Markle looks like a bloody moron wearing a Royal British Legion Poppy,” wrote one.

“Who told her wearing a British poppy while ‘celebrating American veterans’ would be a good look.”

It’s unclear where Meghan’s poppy is from, as it doesn’t match any that are currently sold by the Royal British Legion.
