When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter was born in 2021, they made a call to their close friend, Tyler Perry, asking him to be the godfather of their daughter, Lilibet.
In Harry and Meghan’s Netflix series, the filmmaker revealed getting a phone call from the couple and that they were “pretty serious” about the question in hand.
Tyler Perry has since opened up about being a godfather to Harry and Meghan’s daughter, Princess Lilibet and revealed how close he is to both their children.
The actor opened up on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, titled, ‘Let’s Talk Off-Camera with Kelly Ripan’, which featured an insight into what it is like to be a godfather to a member of the Royal Family.
During the podcast, the filmmaker revealed his sweet nickname for Lilibet is ‘little Lili’, as reported in the Independent.
He added: “She’s so adorable. Oh, she’s so beautiful. She’s just so beautiful. They make some beautiful kids. Archie and Lili are beautiful.”
Lilibet Diana’s name pays tribute to the Queen’s childhood nickname and Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is the second child of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and she is sister to the couple’s first child, Archie.
In the Netflix series, Perry revealed how “honoured” he was to have been asked to be a godfather. People reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex held a christening for their then 21-month-year-oldi in an intimate ceremony at their home in Montecito, California.
Tyler Perry also reflected in the episode, on how Meghan Markle adjusted to such a public relationship with Harry.
He said: “I got the sense that – listen, I know what it’s like to have a father who is not great, so seeing some of the things he was doing, I felt that she was very much isolated and alone. And I couldn’t imagine leaving America – and she had a really, really happy life. She was really happy, and I later found all of that out.”
Speaking to the host, Perry explained the public pressure Meghan Markle faces: “But to go into this world of where everything is larger than life, even to this day, it’s still larger than life for them where everywhere she goes or whatever she does or she puts on something, it sells out.”
Harry and Meghan went on to stay in Tyler Perry’s house when they first made the move to California in 2020 after making their decision to transition away from the royal family.
