Plymouth WW2 bomb LIVE: Major incident declared as bomb squad swarm estate

A major incident has been declared in Plymouth after a suspected World War II bomb was discovered in a garden. A dad said he discovered the mystery object in his garden in Keyham, even hitting the object with a spade.

A bomb squad has rushed to the scene after first being called at 10.30am today to St Michael Avenue. Homes have been evacuated and a huge 200-metre cordon put in place.

A picture of the scene shows the suspected ordnance underneath layers of brick and rubble.

The man who found it told Plymouth Live: “I hit something with a spade but we weren’t sure what it was at first. Since then we’ve had so much rain, the bank collapsed, then there was more rain on Friday and it’s been revealed more and more.

“It’s about one metre long and half a metre in diameter. We’ve found a cap and a round circle thread sheared off or broke off.”
