Piers Morgan blasts 'worst ever PM' Liz Truss over 'laughably obscene' honours list

TalkTV host Piers Morgan has hit out at former Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss following the release of her resignation honours list. The list of names has led to accusations of “cronyism”, as the ex-PM awarded new peerages to a Tory donor, her former deputy chief of staff and one of the lead architects of Brexit.

Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Morgan blasted Truss in view of his 8.7 million followers. He wrote: “The Liz Truss honours list… what a laughable obscenity.

“Britain’s worst ever Prime Minister whose disastrous 44-day tenure tanked the country’s economy, gets to ‘reward’ her cronies with gongs & titles. Just absurd.” (sic)

The former Good Morning Britain host’s tweet was met with an exasperated response, as many followers agreed that Truss should not have been “rewarded” with such an honour.

“44 days? Lmao wow, I wouldn’t be able to show my face after that,” Kirby wrote. While Andrew joked: “I thought probation in a job was usually 3 months. How come she gets to create an honours list when she clearly didn’t pass it.” (sic)

“Total joke and not a funny one either !!!” Phil agreed. While Kay lamented: “Liz Truss honours list, everything that is wrong with Britain. So very, very sad.” (sic)

Sonam reflected: “I suppose it’s a reminder that politics can be a pretty strange and unpredictable beast, and that even the most questionable decisions can sometimes be par for the course.”

Truss was permitted to draw up a resignation honours list despite lasting just 49 days in Downing Street.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak allowed her to release the list despite being urged to block it, with shadow Cabinet Office minister Jonathan Ashworth warning: “This list is proof positive of Rishi Sunak’s weakness and a slap in the face to working people who are paying the price of the Tories crashing the economy.”

Truss has chosen three new lawmakers for the House of Lords: Vote Leave campaigner Matthew Elliott, Conservative Party donor and Vote Leave Chair Jon Moynihan, and former deputy chief of staff Ruth Porter.

Tory MP Jackie Doyle-Price and Maths Anxiety Trust’s Shirley Conran also received damehoods, while Tory MP Alec Shelbrooke was awarded a knighthood.

Additionally, Truss’ former advisers Shabbir Merali and Sophie Jarvis are to be given CBEs.

Express.co.uk contacted Truss’ representatives, who declined to comment.
