Pensioners in their 80s crushed to death by cement truck in horror crash by leafy village

A man and woman, both in their 80s, have died after their car had a collision with a cement mixer in the small Suffolk village of Long Melford. Suffolk Police came to the scene at 3:50pm on Friday after reports of an incident on B1064 Sudbury Road, where the road meets the A134 roundabout.

Despite police presence, the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service had to be called to extract the two 80-year-olds from the vehicle, the force confirmed.

Both were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where on Sunday they both died.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Motorists driving in the area around that time have also been called on to check their dashcam footage.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Joint Norfolk & Suffolk Serious Collision Investigation Unit, quoting reference: 37/24691/23.

According to SuffolkNews, despite the road closure following the incident, three drivers were caught defying the temporary driving restrictions on the roudabout.

In a Twitter thread, police said: “At serious and fatal collisions road closures and diversions are put in place for a reason, they’re not there for decoration.

“A driver has ignored these signs and driven the wrong way around a roundabout into on coming traffic. Reported for careless.

“And unbelievably another driver has done it again. They have also been reported for careless driving.

“People are just not getting it and continuing to ignore the closure.

“Another driver has driven through two road closure signs and around the roundabout the wrong way, this time they had no insurance either. Reported for both offences.”
