Penny Mordaunt's sword-weilding at Coronation propels her up Tory popularity poll

Penny Mordaunt’s popularity with Tory members has shot up following her sword-wielding at the Coronation, a new poll suggests.

The Commons leader is now second place in Conservative Home’s Cabinet league table with a net satisfaction rating of 62.4.

Ms Mordaunt has gone up from fourth place on 46.7 last month.

The Portsmouth North MP went viral for her role carrying ceremonial swords at the King’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey earlier this month.

As Lord President of the Council, she was responsible for bearing The Sword of State and presenting The Jewelled Sword of Offering to Charles.

Ms Mordaunt drew comparisons with Pippa Middleton, who stole the show at her sister Kate’s royal wedding.

Elsewhere in the Cabinet league table, Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch drops from second to fourth with her net popularity rating going from 60.4 to 46.7.

Ms Badenoch has come under criticism this month after plans for a post-Brexit bonfire of EU laws were watered down.

Rishi Sunak has also dropped from sixth place with a rating of 47.4 to mid-table on 21.6.

Meanwhile a record six Cabinet ministers are on negative ratings, including Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Robert Jenrick.
