Outrage as Nazi flags draped across buildings in French city – but all is not as it seems

Residents of the French city of Nantes have been left outraged after Nazi flags were draped across buildings.

Locals walking around noticed the Nazi flags hanging from the Graslin Theatre while people saw men walking around in Nazi uniforms and cars adorned with the flags.

Photos on social media showed just how extensive the redecoration had been, but all was not as it seemed.

It was later revealed the flags, cars, and figures in place were for a TV series set after the fall of France in World War 2.

The series, made by Rezo Productions, is called “Deep” and tells the story of life in occupied France in 1941. During the series, the characters discover the Nazis have created a submarine that can time travel.

Evidence that filming is going on in the city can be seen by the fact there are lights and cameras dotted near where the Nazi flags are flying. There are also cranes nearby helping with the filming.

Outside of time travelling submarines, in reality, Nantes was the site of one of the most devastating acts of terror the Nazis inflicted on the French people.

During the occupation, they executed around 50 people after the Feldkommandant of Nantes, Oberstleutnant Karl Hotz was assassinated.

Before the attack, Nantes was occupied by the German military in June 1940 and it was abandoned by the soldiers in August 1944, as the Allied forces approached.

Postwar, the city endured a tumultuous period during which there were a series of strikes as the city, like the rest of France, tried to recover from the devastation of war.

Today, it is home to a population of around 320,000 people. It is the sixth largest city in France and is known in part for vineyards that produce a form of white wine.
