Northern Illinois rocked by 'rare' 3.6 magnitude earthquake, USGS says

A minor 3.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Illinois in the early hours of Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The USGS said the epicentre of the quake was located in Standard, around 100 miles southwest of Chicago.

Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes noted northern parts of the Midwestern states rarely experience earthquakes compared to more frequent shake-ups in the south.

The Survey noted the tremor was likely picked up by residents in Ottawa, Streator, Pontiac and Springfield,

The 3.6 magnitude earthquake ranks among “light” quakes on the USGS intensity scale.

Light quakes are usually not expected to cause any major damage and residents in affected areas are expected to experience only “light shaking.”
