A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has rocked the island of Shokoku in Japan.
The quake occurred off the southwestern coast of the island, according to the US Geological Survey.
It happened at around 11:14 p.m. local time.
No tsunami warnings have been issued so far, and US authorities find that there is little to no chance of landslides or liquefaction, which happens when the ground loses its strength, placing buildings at risk of collapse.
There were no reports of injuries shortly after the quake.
The eartquake struck the Bungo Channel, the strait separating the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu.
Its epicenter was in the sea about 10.5 miles from Uwajima, a city of about 70,000 people in southwest Shikoku.
Video from Japanese public broadcaster NHK shows the tremor shaking up the city in the middle of the night, as the streets were mostly empty due to the time.
