Mystery deepens after police release main suspect in marina woman's death


Police have released a man arrested on suspicion of murder, after the discovery of a woman’s body in a marina. Officers said they were taking no further action against the 61-year from Caversham, Berkshire, who was taken into custody on Saturday. 

Emergency services were alerted at around 10.30am on Saturday after a woman’s body was spotted floating in the water at the Thames & Kennet Marina, near Reading.

A post-mortem was due to take place on Sunday to try and establish the cause of her death.

Police have not released details about her identity, but her family have been informed.

Her death is being treated as unexplained.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: “A man was arrested in connection with the investigation but he has now been released with no further action to be taken.

“We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding while we investigate the circumstances.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the woman who has died.”

Officers were quick to seal off the area around where the body of the woman was found.

The place is secluded and off the beaten track.

A witness told The Sun that police officers had been at the scene all Saturday afternoon.

He said: “This is a very tragic incident and it is not my place to say anything.

“The police with scenes of crime officers in their protective suits have been here all afternoon.

“The body of the woman involved was taken away in a private ambulance.

“It is very upsetting for everyone connected with the marina.”
