Mum's fury as teacher gives daughter 'behaviour warning' after getting pupil's name wrong

A mum has revealed her frustration at a teacher getting her daughter’s name wrong for a year – and then punishing her when she was corrected.

The irked parent took to parenting website Mumsnet to vent her annoyance – and canvass other parents on what to do next.

And their response was that it was a “bonkers” situation – and that she should contact the school immediately about the incident involving her “DD” – the forum’s shorthand for dearest daughter.

The mum wrote: “DD mentioned when she started school last year that her English teacher was consistently getting her name wrong. I laughed it off saying she had lots of names to remember and I’m sure she would get there.

“A year later and it’s continually happening. She teaches her three times a week so it’s not as though she rarely sees her, I’ve told DD to politely state what her name is each time she calls her by the wrong name. DD did so this week and was given a behaviour warning for being rude.”

She added that her daughter’s name was not unusual and was the “equivalent of the teacher calling her Jasmine when her name is Jennifer”.

The mum then asked if she was being unreasonable to say something to the school or teacher at the next parent’s evening. In a poll on the website 93 percent of other Mumsnet users did not think that the mum was being unreasonable.

Many of the fellow mumsnetters reacted in anger at the situation – and rather than wait suggested she contact the school straight away.

One said: “A behaviour warning?! That’s mental. It’s so rude calling someone the wrong name.” Another said: “Why would you want to teach DD that it’s ok to be disrespected? It’s her bloody name.

“Flag it with the school asap, especially now she’s received a behaviour warning which is, quite frankly, bonkers.”

But not everyone agreed that the mum should be so annoyed and challenged her to “learn 300 new names yourself in two months”.

There are all kinds of issues discussed on the Am I Being Unreasonable? Mumsnet forum – many of which have made the headlines.

In July Mumsnetter asked for advice regarding her relationship – and whether it’s acceptable for her to marry a man she is not wholly in love with.
