Mum shamed for giving one twin 'beautiful' name and other a 'ridiculous' one

A teenage mother sharing the names of her twin daughters online has revealed how her own grandmother believes one of the names is “much prettier” so the other sibling will be “jealous” growing up.

The woman named her twin girls Juno Tamsin and Freya Joy, after spending nine months brainstorming unique names to help them stand out. However, the new parent told users on the forum site Reddit that her grandmother believes she’s set them up for failure, saying “silly names like that are all you can expect when babies have babies”.

She wrote: “According to my grandma, Freya’s name is ‘so much prettier’ and Juno will be ‘so jealous’.

“Now correct me if I’m wrong, but while their names might not be really, really common I don’t think they’re ridiculous at all.”

“It’s not like they’re called Juenough and Freiyah or Seaweed and Fishfood, they’re just normal, strong, pretty, uncommon names.”

The Mirror reports one user supported the mum, writing: “I am a huge name snob and more than twice your age and I think you’ve chosen beautifully.

“Unusual but not weird, distinctive but not declasse. Elegant but not over the top. Grandma doesn’t get it.”

Another user added: “Weird to have to explain to a grandma how personal preference works and just because she prefers a name doesn’t make it superior.

“Some people of that generation honestly seem to think their opinion is gospel and can’t fathom a world of other opinions that doesn’t revolve around them.”

Fellow online pals suggested her grandmother needed to be kept at arm’s length if she failed to support her granddaughter and her twins.

One user advised: “Juno and Freya are two very good names. If it was me, maybe grandma would be kept out of the loop more from now on.”

Another person reflected: “When I was in my early 20s, I tended a bar and I wore low-cut tops – because they made me feel comfortable and good about myself. My grandmother thought it was a good idea to tell me I showed off my body for tips. I didn’t speak to her for months after that comment.

“I don’t know why older people say the things they do, but it’s within your right to demand respect and an apology before she spits that vitriol on your innocent babes.”
