Motorway terror as UK police save driver after electric car couldn't brake

A terrifying incident unfolded on the M62 motorway when police had to swarm a car that couldn’t brake due to an electrical fault.

The drama happened on Wednesday afternoon between junction 11 for Birchwood and junction 12 for Eccles.

Merseyside and Greater Manchester police officers used special tactics to ram the vehicle and block it with several police cars, eventually bringing it to a halt.

For a short time, all lanes were closed as police dealt with the situation, causing traffic to stop. Photos from the scene show the black car sandwiched between two Matrix vehicles from Merseyside Police.

Two lanes reopened later, but two remained closed, leading to nearly an hour’s delay and congestion ahead of rush hour.

North West Motorway Police shared details of the incident on media, with the Manchester Evening News reporting: “Police currently have a lane three and four closure on M62 EB J11 to 12.

“This is following the use of tactics to stop an electric vehicle with an electric fault where the driver was unable to brake. Motorway officers from Merseyside, Cheshire and GMP brought the vehicle to a safe stop.”
