Meghan Markle sparks fury in veterans with poppy choice ahead of Armistice Day

Meghan Markle recently wore a poppy brooch on her sweater during an opening of a new Navy fitness centre in San Diego, CA — but there were some veterans who were furious by Madame Duchess’s choice of accessory.

November 11 is typically celebrated as Armistice Day in Great Britain and other countries of the world.

To commemorate the occasion, a red poppy is often traditionally worn.

However, in the United States, November 11 is celebrated as Veteran’s Day — done in honour of the armed forces — and wearing a poppy isn’t required.

Poppies, however, are often worn by Americans for Memorial Day, which takes place in May, and serves a similar purpose to Armistice Day.

“In 2017 the American Legion Family won the support of Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day where all Americans are encouraged to wear a poppy to honor fallen service personnel and veterans,” reports Newsweek.

And because Madame Duchess chose to wear the poppy in November — honouring the British custom — instead of in May for the American custom, some veterans felt slighted.

“Meghan Markle looks like a bloody moron wearing a Royal British Legion Poppy,” wrote one.

“Who told her wearing a British poppy while ‘celebrating American veterans’ would be a good look.”

However, Meghan’s pin doesn’t match any that are currently sold by the Royal British Legion.

As might be expected, Meghan Markle continues to be a divisive figure, as she has been since she first married Prince Harry in 2017.
