Meghan Markle on Tuesday revealed the touching reason why she arrived at the Invictus Games two days after her husband, Prince Harry.
The Duchess of Sussex arrived in Germany on Tuesday afternoon to attend the Invictus Games with her husband.
The pair attended a glitzy reception together for 1,600 athletes and their friends and family in Düsseldorf, the host city for this year’s Games.
There, Meghan addressed the crowd in a two-minute speech, in which she apologised for missing the previous three days of the Games and explained why she hadn’t arrived alongside her husband.
And it was a very relatable reason that kept Meghan in the US for longer.

She explained she had to get her children “settled down” before she could fly out, particularly Prince Archie as he had to be dropped off at school.
The Duchess said: “Hi everybody, it is so special to be here and I’m sorry that I was a little late to the party.
“Like so many of you, you know this is about family and friends and the community that Invictus has created and Fisher House has created, and so I had to spend a little bit more time getting the little ones settled at home.
“Three milkshakes and a school drop off and I just landed a couple of hours ago and I am thrilled that the first event I can do for Invictus is here with all of you. It is amazing and I hear it has got off to a good start so far.”
“So a huge thank you for this amazing event that Fisher House has put on. I was really fortunate to go and visit one of the houses in Los Angeles just a couple of weeks ago and I was so moved by everything that they do because they understand, as you do, as my husband does in creating the Invictus Games, how much the value of rehabilitation matters, not just as a solitary experience, but as a family.”
But the Duchess’s comments sparked the fury of royal author Tom Bower.
Mr Bower questioned how Meghan could stress the importance of spending time with her family while she and Prince Harry remain estranged from both their families bar a few members.
He said: “For her to pretend she was late because she had to give her children milkshakes was just ludicrous.
“This is a woman who talked tonight about the importance of family… The importance of family for Meghan Markle, who did her best to destroy the Royal Family, who ignores her own father, who talks about how we have to look after victims… And leaves her father in Mexico with a stroke and doesn’t visit him. And talks about family values.”
