A conservative commentator has taken a swipe at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s controversial documentary on Netflix as he brands it a “work of fiction”.
The docu-series, titled Harry & Meghan, aired in December 2022 and sparked backlash from fans across the nation.
In the six-part series, the couple spoke about their difficulties during their time as working members of the Firm, discussing the Duchess of Sussex’s mental health and Prince Harry’s tense conversations with members of his family.
Prince William, Harry’s brother, particularly came under fire during the series which saw Harry claim he had “shouted” during a meeting about his move to the United States.
And now, Nile Gardiner – former aide to Margaret Thatcher – has shared his opinion on the documentary that brought in “record breaking views”.
Writing on Twitter in response to news it had been nominated for Hollywood Critics Award, he said: “Should really be nominated as a work of fiction. The sheer amount of lies and disinformation contained in this documentary is simply staggering.”
Meghan was shown in tears during the documentary, while Harry discusses his lack of “guidance” in the wake of the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in car crash in 1997.
The programme also featured interviews with family, friends, journalists and historians.
It faced plenty of controversy following its release, particularly after it was revealed the show had used old paparazzi footage from before the couple’s engagement.
Despite mixed critical reviews, it was the most-watched Netflix show in the UK in 2022.
The show holds the record for the biggest Netflix documentary debut, with a total 81.6 million hours watched on its first four days of release, adding up to more than 28 million households.
The Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) is a film critic organisation based in Los Angeles, California.
Founded in 2016 as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, it was renamed three years later.
