Man Utd transfer news: Mason Greenwood talks, Erik ten Hag sanctions move, £78m deal eyed

The New Year has arrived, meaning Manchester United and other clubs worldwide are free to complete transfer business until the turn of February. Express Sport provides all the latest news from Old Trafford, including a deal already sealed on the first day of the January window.

Atletico Madrid ‘in Mason Greenwood talks’

Mason Greenwood’s future will be one of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first major decisions in control of United’s football operations.

And the 22-year-old forward has attracted heavyweight interest during his season-long loan in Spain. According to Marca, Atletico Madrid have held initial talks over his signature next summer.

It’s claimed that sporting director Andrea Berta is taking steps towards completing the transfer once he leaves Getafe.

But The Sun report that Barcelona are also big players in the Greenwood race. They plan to lodge a £40m bid and offer the famed No 10 shirt to seal his services at the end of the campaign.

Donny van de Beek joins Frankfurt

Donny van de Beek has completed a loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the season, potentially ending his nightmare United career.

The 26-year-old midfielder passed his medical at the Bundesliga club in December but remained an option in Erik ten Hag’s matchday squads until the New Year.

He has now sealed that switch on January 1, though, and could join permanently at the end of the season.

Frankfurt reportedly have an option to buy Van de Beek for around £12m, should he reignite his career in Germany.

Man Utd ‘eyeing £78m Raphael Varane replacement’

United may need to replace Raphael Varane next summer if they fail to agree a new contract with a reduced salary before his current deal expires.

According to French outlet Le10Sport, Lille centre-back Leny Yoro is firmly on the Red Devils’ radar amid an impressive season.

It’s claimed United have made contact over the 18-year-old but face competition from Liverpool, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

The report adds that Lille are determined to keep hold of Yoro and have therefore slapped a £78m valuation on him this year.
