Man Utd forgotten man gives Raphael Varane food for thought as manager issue highlighted

Raphael Varane may have just been given some food for thought from Manchester United team-mate Donny van de Beek on his own future at Old Trafford with the Dutchman admitting he will likely leave in the New Year. Van de Beek’s career has nosedived ever since his move from Ajax to United in 2020.

He was out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and failed to win over Erik ten Hag either with the midfielder spending the second half of last season out on loan at Everton. Van de Beek’s fortunes haven’t changed this season with just a two-minute cameo off the bench in the league so far.

And it appears as though he’s accepted his fate heading into the New Year, putting out a come-and-get-me plea to other clubs. ”I am bouncing to play matches again,” Van de Beek said.

“The manager is making different choices now. We have a big squad and I am not the only one knocking on the door. We’ll see in January what happens.

“I need to start playing games very soon – if not at Man United then at another club. I think I have to be ambitious.” Van de Beek’s desire to move on from United now to find regular football may also be on Varane’s mind.

The Frenchman has fallen out of favour under Ten Hag in the league with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans being picked ahead of him. At 30 years of age, Varane remains one of the top defenders in world football but he’ll want to be playing regularly at this stage of his career.
