Man Utd and VAR pile on Everton misery as Alejandro Garnacho nets instant Goal of the Year

Express Sport runs through four things learned as United closed the gap to the Premier League summit to six points.

Garnacho enters history books

United were up against a loud environment on the back of Everton’s 10-point Premier League deduction.

But they silenced the unsettled home crowd just three minutes in through Garnacho’s spectacular bicycle kick.

It’s no overstatement to label it one of the greatest goals in Premier League history, with the technique eclipsing Wayne Rooney’s memorable strike against Manchester City.

And Garnacho paid homage to his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, with his celebration after setting United on their way to an emphatic win.

Fernandes shows captain credentials

Bruno Fernandes’ credentials as United captain often come under debate for his antics toward referees when the team’s backs are against the wall.

But there is no doubting the Portuguese playmaker’s class, and he showed that with the assist for Martial’s third.

He also showcased his class without the ball at his feet, though, by handing Rashford the ball to end his goal drought from the penalty spot.

The United No 10 gratefully took the opportunity, firing a delightful spot-kick past Jordan Pickford into the top corner.

Martial bites Everton again

Martial is no longer United’s first-choice striker. That status belongs to Ten Hag’s new £72million man Rasmus Hojlund.

But if there was one player who Everton wouldn’t have wanted to replace the injured 20-year-old, it was him.

The Frenchman loves scoring against the Toffees, recording his ninth such goal in 16 appearances on Sunday.

Fernandes put the ball on a plate for Martial, who characteristically kept his composure to lift a close-range effort over Pickford.

United’s away comforts continue

United have won four consecutive away Premier League games to contribute to their recent upturn in results.

They edged past Burnley, Sheffield United and Fulham 1-0 before recording their comfortable triumph on Merseyside.

Sunday’s win was United’s eighth in the league this season, but the first with a higher goal margin than one.

Ten Hag watched on from the stands as he served his one-match suspension. However, he would’ve been delighted with what he saw.
