Major coastguard search after person missing in water during Storm Jocelyn

A major search has been launched off the coast of south Wales after reports a person was missing in the water.

Emergency services were called to Portcawl, around 25 miles west of Cardiff, just before 6pm on Tuesday, January 23. The search helicopter was said to be at the scene.

Coastguard crews from Porthcawl, Port Talbot, and Llantwit Major were involved with the search. A lifeboat has also been called to the area, reports WalesOnline.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “HM Coastguard is coordinating the response to a report of a person in the water at Porthcawl. The alarm was raised at around 5.55pm on January 23. Coastguard rescue teams have been sent from Porthcawl, Port Talbot, and Llantwit Major.”

The RNLI had previously warned people to stay away from coastal waters during the storm. It came after yellow and amber warnings were in place for vast swathes of the country.

RNLI National Water Safety Partner, Tim Doran said: “This week’s predicted weather could lead to dangerous and uncertain conditions as strong winds and heavy rain hit the UK and Ireland.

“If you plan on visiting the coast, the RNLI advise the public to stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.”

The charity warned that cold water shock is a real risk when the water temperatures drop below 15c.
