M25 driver livid at being slapped with ULEZ fine after being forced on diversion

A driver says he is livid after being fined when he was forced into a ULEZ zone while following a diversion off of the M25.

The driver took to Reddit to ask people whether they felt it was fair and whether he should appeal the fine.

He explained he was driving from Leicester to Folkestone on the M25 at 11.20pm when he came across what he thought was resurfacing work and was forced off the road and through a “terrible” diversion.

After not spotting some of the “pathetic” diversion signs, the driver drove into a ULEZ zone and was later sent a letter with a fine.

Not only was he caught by the camera, but he also says the dodgy diversion added two hours to his trip.

The driver said in his Reddit post: “Whole thing added nearly two hours to my journey, I get back stressed, late, and having to get up at 6am for a meeting.

“Now I get a letter with a ULEZ fine to just rub salt into the wounds. How can you close the road, divert me, and then charge me for the ordeal?”

His post got a mixed reaction with many urging him to appeal against the harsh fine and others claiming it was his fault.

One commenter said: “To me, it reads like you missed the diversion signs (got lost, misread satnav, just didn’t see them) and got yourself in the ULEZ zone, therefore nothing to appeal. It sounds like it was totally your own fault.

“You, of course, can try but I wouldn’t hold your breath.”

But another said he may have a case for an appeal if the diversion signs were not up to standard.

They said: “There are certain standards for diversion signs so worth an appeal even if technically it was your own fault for getting lost.

“If loads of people are putting in appeals due to poor signage you’re more likely to get yours granted.”
