Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made an offer to Sven Goran Eriksson to come down to the club and spend a day with the team at their training ground. The former England manager recently revealed he has been given a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Sven, 75, was recently informed by doctors that he has terminal pancreatic cancer and “at best” has only a year left to live.
Eriksson, like his father, has been a lifelong supporter of Liverpool and admitted during an interview with Sky Sports that his one football regret was never getting the chance to manage the Merseyside club.
He said: “So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool, and that will not happen for sure, but I’m still a Liverpool fan.”
Now, after momentum gathered among Liverpool and football fans in general for Sven to be given a shot at experiencing Liverpool management in a legends match against Ajax at Anfield in March, current boss Klopp has now spoken out.
Ahead of Liverpool’s weekend fixture with Bournemouth, the German has put out an open invitation for Sven to join him on Merseyside and spend time with the squad.
“The only thing I can say is absolutely he’s very welcome to come here and he can sit in my seat in my office and do my job for a day if he wants. That’s no problem,” said Klopp.
“Being on the sideline might be a little bit more difficult. To have him here and show him everything and how this wonderful club developed over the years, I think that’s definitely something we will tell him.
“He can come over and have a few wonderful hours here I’m sure.” In response to the poignant interview conducted by Sven, Liverpool supporters have backed the idea of the 75-year-old managing the LFC Legends side in a charity home match against Ajax in March.
The annual fixture raises funds for the LFC Foundation, which supports children and young people.
As for his current life situation, Sven maintains his aim is to live the rest of his life “as normally as he can”. The Swedish icon said: “It came from nowhere, a shock for me the children the whole family.
“You have to work with it, and don’t think about it 24 hours a day and don’t sit at home and do nothing, live your life as normal as possible as long as you can.
“I refuse to give up, I want to live every day a normal life.”
