Leeds stabbing: Boy knifed to death in street after picking up child from school pictured

A teenage boy who died after being stabbed to death close to a school has been named and pictured by police.

The boy, who was knifed close to Horsforth School, his former school, in Leeds at about 3pm yesterday, has been named locally as Alfie Lewis.

Following the incident he was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries West Yorkshire Police said.

Police said a teenage boy had been arrested in connection with the incident but have not confirmed what he had been arrested for, but it did say a murder probe had been launched.

A second school, St Margaret’s Primary School in Town Lane, is also close to scene of the stabbing and it is believed Alfie was picking up another child from that school when the incident happened and teachers performed CPR.

Following the incident parents at the school were told there had been a “distressing incident” involving a former pupil.

One social media tribute read: “Another child taken by knife crime sending all my love to the Lewis family.”

Another added: “You were a kind and caring young boy with so much to give. I don’t know if you realised how many friends you had and how many people care about you but they were out in force for you tonight laying flowers and lighting candles for you at your bench.

“Sleep tight little one.”

Detectives investigating the stabbing have issued an appeal for information.

DCI Stacey Atkinson said: “Our investigation is at an early stage and we are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish exactly what led to this needless loss of a young man’s life.

“We understand the immense impact and huge shock a tragic incident of this nature will will have on the community locally. Our neighbourhood police team are working with partners, including schools in the area to offer support and reassurance. We have already spoken to a number of witnesses and are keen to hear from anyone who has information about the incident.”

Parents said they encountered a “horrible” situation outside the primary school on Tuesday, which had become a crime scene.

One person said: “It’s horrible. It’s shocking because it’s a nice area.

“You read about these things happening in London and you think it’s dangerous to be a teenager there, but you don’t think it would happen here. I just keep thinking about the parents. He probably went out this morning and they were expecting him to come home, and he’s not there.”
