King Charles's 'dashing equerry' makes third place on Tatler's power list

The 39-year-old set hearts a flutter when he made an appearance onscreen during the King’s Coronation and is said to have royal fans chanting his name at official events, leading him to be dubbed the “dashing equerry”.

Having previously worked alongside the late Queen Elizabeth, he played a prominent role last year in escorting Liz Truss to meet Charles shortly after Her Majesty’s death and then taking Rishi Sunak to Buckingham Palace once he succeeded her as Prime Minister.

Tatler said: “The erstwhile Major Johnny has a fabulous sense of humour and looks as good in a suit as he does a kilt.

“It is from within palace walls that the King’s equerry wields his unique brand of quiet, charming power, but he’s spotted where it counts, at the Coronation or the opening of the Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery in Fitzrovia, to which he wore a bunny tie and charmed India Rose James.”

Charles and Camilla’s were placed at the top of the list after the publication praised their decision to cut down their Coronation guest list from 8,000 to 2,000, showing a “fresh, modern order was decreed”.

Other royals to feature on the list include the Prince and Princess of Wales thanks to the “continued social significance of the Royal Family” but surprisingly they did not make the Top 10.

The pair topped the list in 2019 but did not make the cut at all last year, however thanks to them “ramping up the glamour” they have regained their place.

Tatler writes that for William and Kate “their real power is their disarming normality”.

Prince George’s godfather Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, and his fiancée Olivia Henson did feature in the Top 10, as did the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort, make up entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury and owner of royal favourite club Annabel’s Richard Caring.

Coronation fan favourite Penny Mordaunt, who carried the Sword of Power “so graciously” at the ceremony, impressed so much that she was also included on the Power Index.

This week has been a busy one for the royals so far, with William, Kate and the King and Queen all carrying out separate engagements yesterday.

The Prince finished his two-day nationwide tour marking the launch of his Homewards campaign to end homelessness, while Kate was in Southampton to open a new women’s facility and Charles and Camilla made a stop in his model town Poundbury.
